History and Growth

Almarai was established by Irish entrepreneurs Alastair and Paddy McGuckian, in partnership with HH Prince Sultan bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Kabeer, whose vision transformed Saudi Arabia’s traditional dairy farming industry.In its early years, the company focused on developing dairy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia by supporting local farmers and enhancing milk production and distribution. During the 1990s, Almarai underwent major restructuring, transitioning from decentralized operations to centralized, large-scale dairy farms and advanced processing facilities, primarily located in Al Kharj.

In 2005, Almarai became a joint-stock company, followed by its initial public offering (IPO) in 2006, when 30% of its shares were listed on Tadawul. Savola Group remains a major shareholder.The company diversified beyond fresh milk into cheese, yogurt, bakery products, and beverages. Strategic partnerships, including a joint venture with PepsiCo under International Dairy and Juice (IDJ), supported regional expansion through acquisitions such as Beyti (Egypt) and Teeba (Jordan). Almarai also entered the poultry sector through the acquisition of Hail Agricultural Development Company.

From 2011 onward, Almarai invested heavily in Saudi Arabia and the wider region, creating thousands of jobs and strengthening food security. By 2014, the company controlled approximately 44% of the Gulf dairy market.Almarai further expanded internationally through agricultural investments in Argentina and the United States, supporting a sustainable feed supply chain. In 2017, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) increased its stake in Almarai, reflecting strong investor confidence.

The company has consistently been ranked the most popular brand in Saudi Arabia, according to YouGov, and has announced multi-billion-riyal investments to enhance production capacity, logistics, and regional expansion. In 2021, Almarai acquired Bakemart’s UAE and Bahrain operations, strengthening its bakery portfolio.
