Etihad Airways is one of the two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates, alongside Emirates. Headquartered in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Zayed International Airport, the airline commenced operations in November 2003 and has since grown into one of the region’s leading global carriers.Etihad operates over 1,000 flights per week to 120+ passenger and cargo destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Foundation & Growth
Etihad Airways was established by Amiri Decree in July 2003 under the vision of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to create a national airline for Abu Dhabi. The airline was founded with AED 500 million in start-up capital and launched its first commercial flight to Beirut in November 2003.The name “Etihad”, meaning “union” in Arabic, reflects the unity of the seven Emirates of the UAE and the airline’s national identity.
Expansion & Strategic Development
Etihad experienced rapid expansion through major aircraft orders, including Airbus A380s, Boeing 777s, and Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The airline pursued global partnerships through its Equity Alliance, acquiring minority stakes in several international airlines to strengthen connectivity and market presence.Following industry and market challenges, Etihad restructured its strategy to focus on sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and core aviation excellence, strengthening its position as a competitive global carrier.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Etihad demonstrated resilience through operational adjustments, fleet optimization, and strong health and safety measures. Corporate Affairs Head Office
Etihad Airways is headquartered in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Zayed International Airport. In 2007, the airline invested AED 183.6 million (USD 50 million) in the development of its purpose-built head office and training centre, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Abu Dhabi as its home base. The facility was completed the same year and continues to support Etihad’s operational and training requirements.
Governance & Leadership
Etihad Airways operates in accordance with its founding legislation and Articles of Association and is governed by a Board of Directors chaired by Mohamed Mubarak Al Mazrouei. The Board comprises seven independent non-executive members and is supported by two key sub-committees: an Executive Committee and an Audit Committee, each operating under its own charter and leadership.

Etihad has been led by several distinguished executives over the years. James Hogan served as President and CEO from 2006 to 2018, followed by Tony Douglas, who held the role until October 2022. The current Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Aviation Group is Antonoaldo Neves, overseeing the airline’s strategic direction and sustainable growth.
Etihad Equity Alliance
Etihad previously operated an Equity Alliance, holding minority stakes in several international airlines, including Air Berlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, and Virgin Australia. These investments were intended to enhance global connectivity and strategic collaboration. By the end of 2023, Etihad had fully exited all equity holdings. Virgin Australia’s restructuring following bankruptcy concluded Etihad’s involvement, while the Serbian government’s recapitalisation of Air Serbia progressively reduced Etihad’s stake until its complete exit. The airline was also a founding member of the now-disbanded Etihad Airways Partners alliance, which operated between 2015 and 2018.
